Down syndrome

Symptoms

  • Tone deficiency
  • Palm creases on broad, short hands
  • Relatively short fingers of small hands
  • Flexibility that is too great
  • Having a short height

Causes

Human cells typically contain 23 pairs of chromosomes. Faulty cell division caused by chromosome 21 leads to Down syndrome. Chromosome 21 is duplicated as a result of these errors in cell division. Developmental issues and distinctive traits are associated with Down syndrome that are caused by the extra material in the body. There are three possible genetic causes of Down syndrome:

There are approximately 95% of cases of Down syndrome caused by trisomy 21, which results in the presence of three copies of chromosome 21 in place of the normal two copies in all cells. A result of abnormal cell division during sperm or egg development.

In individuals with Down syndrome type 2, chromosome 21 is present in only a few cells. A mosaic of normal and defective cells results from aberrant cell division after conception.

A translocation of chromosome 21 during or before pregnancy may also result in down syndrome. The children have two copies of chromosome 21 as is customary. However, they also contain extra genetic material associated with chromosome 21 molecule.

Risk factors

A mother’s probability of having a child with Down syndrome rises as she becomes older. The reason for this is that older eggs are more likely to undergo incorrect chromosomal divisions. A woman’s probability of having a newborn with Down syndrome rises with age. Because younger women have more children, most people with Down syndrome are younger than 35.

Both sexes can pass the Down syndrome gene on to their children.

Those with DS tend to be born to parents who already have one, as well as their own parents. With the assistance of a genetic advisor, parents may determine the viability of having a secondary child with Down syndrome.

Prevention 

Down syndrome cannot be prevented. If your child is very likely to have DS, a genetic counselor should be consulted. If you have a child with the condition, this is especially important.
